01-11-19 Jonathan Sahrbeck
Part 1: Ray welcomes the new Cumberland County District Attorney, Jonathan Sahrbeck, in studio. Ray takes a moment to talk about the miracle of Jayme Closs. She is the teenager who disappeared in Wisconsin last October after both of her parents had been found shot dead, has been found alive and a suspect has been taken into custody. Ray turns to Jonathan and they talk about the rally that was held yesterday in Augusta to increase public awareness about forced laborers or sex workers in Maine and to advocate for a bill allowing trafficking victims to have criminal convictions vacated. It was organized by Dee Clarke, Executive Director of Survivor Speak USA. She was trafficked as a child.
Part 2: The boys tease Steve Webster. Steve has been very active and helpful in getting the mindset of lawmakers, law enforcement and the public changed. They take a call from Fox News Radio’s Jared Halpren regarding the National Emergency Border. Pres Trump stated again he might still declare a national emergency on the southern border to circumvent his impasse with Congress over border wall funding. However, Democrats could counter that move by suing to block any emergency declaration. And that could cause a lengthy legal quagmire for both sides. We explore the advantages and detriments of emergency declarations.
Part 3: Ray talks about the previous DA, Stephanie Anderson, that has held that position for 28 years. Ray asks Jonathan what will life be like without her. Jonathan gives some details into the office and changes that he would like to implement. He doesn’t see the staff or office changing much, but his focus will be on the visibility of the office and educating the public about what they do in the DA’s office. They discuss the process of prosecuting criminals.
