Detroit’s Fire Commissioner Eric Jones confirmed that probationary firefighter, Robert Pattison, was terminated for work behavior deemed “offensive and racially insensitive”. When asked if Pattison deserved to lose his job over the watermelon, Second Battalion Chief Shawn McCarty said he wasn’t sure. “Between what he did and losing his job, there were a few things that could have been done,” McCarty said.

We need to not only have a civil conversation, but also be able to listen to the other side.
